Summer Hours

Hi friends! I thought I would post a bit about those "summer hours" that I love so much!

We tend to "school" year-round in blocks, but sometimes, when we aren't doing a curriculum is when the best learning gets done! We were taking a road trip and that is a lot of opportunity to do some important learning about our world, our surrounding, and how different each state can be!

This day we were on the back roads of Missouri. The obvious learning opportunity would be those audiobook hours! But when you turn off the audiobooks you have the chance to learn more. Here is an example of our Missouri learning.

I don't know about you, but where I live it's "Chicory season!" The beautiful blue flowers copiously grace the sides of our roads. So first we identify those flowers, and then we talk about their rich history! Did you know that they are edible from tip to root? Bitter greens for salads, the roots can be boiled and eaten, and most famously, the roots can be roasted and made into a coffee substitute or coffee enhancement! It's actually fun to harvest some and make your own chicory snacks! If you're interested, read more here: https://www.britannica.com/plant/chicory.

How would you record this learning opportunity? We record it as science, and because it's just the beginning of talks about edible foods, or plant identification, or even then bird identification, we get some good learning in about the life-scape around us in applicable to life ways!
